  • 4 Stories Above Ground
  • Structure: Steel & Reinforced Concrete

The proposed site is in the same compound of the head temple of the largest denomination of the Korean Buddhism. Being located in the middle of the cultural belt connecting old palaces and Insadong in downtown in Seoul, the existing main temple, an old traditional building, is a symbolic icon of the Korean Buddhism. To avoid conflict with the main building, it was decided early that the memorial hall should be a simple backdrop to flatter the main building. Simple monotonic fa?ade was adopted to respond to this issue. The air space between the glass wall and inner window-walls provides better air circulation in summer and solar space in winter. As the headquarter building for the denomination, a huge and complex program required to accommodate office spaces, museum, performance hall, and a big conference hall. A large portion of the functions are underground to minimize the profile of the building above the ground level. The modern design of this building selected through a competition signifies the trend and intention to modernize the conservative traditional Buddhism in Korea.
